Then, LabIngate has written the “Research to Develop” series to accompany you. “Delineation of Research”” is an introduction to this series.
“Delineation of Research” is a research introduction article that gives an overview to what a research is, explains the activities that makes a research and the relationship between development and research.
What is Research?
According to OECD (2002), Research involves “creative work undertaken on a systematic basis in order to increase the stock of knowledge, including knowledge of humans, culture and society, and the use of this stock of knowledge to devise new applications.” Also, Meriem Webster (2017) defined research as a systematic search for the truth or facts about something.
What makes an activity a research?
For an activity to be called research, such activity needs to be original, indeterminate, innovative, logical, and transferable. Researches are fundamentally used to solve problems. It is constantly aimed at new findings or based on original concepts or hypotheses. Research most times are cumulative, that is a research project is usually used to expand on previous works. Final outcome of Researches is highly indeterminate about its final outcome, and it is aimed at producing results. These results can either be freely transferred or traded in a marketplace (Do you want to know more about research transfer and research trading? Click here and quickly create an account for free!).
Research methods and systems can be used for the advancement of human knowledge in every area of lives using different forms of research which include Medical, Technological, Scientific, Legal, humanities, artistic, economic, social, business, marketing, etc.
The level of Researches an organization get engaged with determines the future of the business. An example is in Google where “Research at Google tackles the most challenging problems in Computer Science and related fields. Being bold and taking risks is essential to what we do, and research teams are embedded throughout Google allowing our discoveries to affect billions of users each day” (Research at Google, 2017). The results of the researches are evident in the organization. Quality research is the backbone to successful businesses that have lasted for years and are consistently effective.
Research and Development
Development comes as a result of research done, thus Development is putting research into action. Research is not complete without the development part (this is the missing link in many academic research works done). Many successful industries now give more focus on Research and Development. This has contributed to the success, agility, and innovations in such businesses. Business Dictionary defines Research and Development (R&D) as “Systematic activity combining both basic and applied research, and aimed at discovering solutions to problems or creating new goods and knowledge. R&D may result in ownership of intellectual property such as patents”.
OECD (2002) stated that the term Research and Development covers three types of activity:
- Basic research: Basic research is experimental or theoretical work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, without any particular application or use in view.
- Applied research: Applied research is original investigation undertaken in order to acquire new knowledge. It is, however, directed primarily towards a specific, practical aim or objective.
- Experimental development: Experimental development is systematic work, drawing on knowledge gained from research and practical experience and producing additional knowledge, which is directed to producing new products or processes or to improving existing products or processes.
